| Orion Health congratulates Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and Pan Birmingham Cancer Network for healthcare IT award |
Award recognises innovative use of integration engine and alerts to support delivery of high quality patient careLondon, 13 October, 2011 – Orion Health, a leading provider of healthcare integration and workflow technology, today congratulates partner Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust and the Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network for their success at the EHI Awards 2011. The Trust was recognised for its Keyworker Alerts system developed with Orion Health’s Rhapsody software. The system set out to address a common challenge within the NHS. When known cancer patients present unexpectedly at A&E, their keyworkers and multi-disciplinary team are often unaware of their hospital admission for days - this means that the patient often receives inappropriate care and tests, and is not discharged as quickly as they might be. Using Orion Health’s Rhapsody software, a system was developed for the Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network in which every time a cancer patient arrived at A&E, the system sends an automatic email alert to the patient's Cancer Nurse Specialist. This means the nurse can intervene in hospital early, the length of stay can be reduced and many unnecessary tests can be avoided. The solution was trialled with colorectal cancer patients, and has since been rolled out to Upper Gastro-Intestinal cancer patients. Other cancer site groups are planned to be entered in the system. After three months of the system being in place, length-of-stay for colorectal patients had dropped from an average of 20 days to 4, and readmissions had dropped from 28% to 8%. The Upper Gastro-Intestinal and Colorectal cancer teams are on target to save 3500 bed days and around £800,000 this financial year. Colin Henderson, Managing Director, Orion Health UK & Ireland said today, “We are particularly pleased to congratulate the team at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals and Pan-Birmingham Cancer Network- the solution was built by the team using Rhapsody - showing the robustness of the software, not only as an integration engine for NHS Trusts, but as a tool to deliver rapid and significant improvements in care. Furthermore, the system was built in record time - five days, and was rolled out to pilot within three months. This was a well-deserved win, and a credit to the teams involved.” About Orion Health Ltd.
