In healthcare, orders are the request or instruction by a physician for the treatment of a patient under his/her care, given to another healthcare provider fulfilling the order for treatment. Orders are sent between the physician and other healthcare providers (such as nurses, pharmacists, other physicians or healthcare providers) or departments (such as laboratories, radiology or pharmacies). Physician orders are typically standardized across the organization, yet may be individualized for each doctor or specialty by using order sets. Orders are communicated to all departments and involved caregivers, improving response time and avoiding scheduling problems and conflict with existing orders. In modern-day healthcare, orders are typically communicated electronically over an internal network or the Internet. This processes is called Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE).
