| Computerized Physician Order Entry (CPOE) |
|
The process of electronic entry of physician instructions for the treatment of patients (particularly hospitalized patients) under his or her care. These orders are communicated over a computer network to the medical staff (nurses, therapists, pharmacists or other physicians) or to the departments (pharmacy, laboratory or radiology) responsible for fulfilling the order. CPOE decreases delay in order completion, reduces errors related to handwriting or transcription, allows order entry at point-of-care or off-site, provides error-checking for duplicate or incorrect doses or tests, and simplifies inventory and posting of charges. Although manufacturers use the term Computerized Physician Order Entry, a more accurate term would be Computerized Prescriber Order Entry. Physicians are not the only ones to order on CPOE, nurse practitioners and physician assistants order on CPOE as well. Orion Health’s set of software tools and applications help manage and support the clinical process within hospital and community environments. Orion Health provides a highly flexible and customizable solution for the electronic ordering, review and sign-off of laboratory and radiology tests – which can be implemented as an enterprise solution or integrated with existing order and fulfillment vendor applications.
