Soprano EMPIEnterprise Master Patient Index

The cEMPI creates and maintains an authoritative central repository of patient demographic information and identifiers.

Key benefits
cEMPI has been successfully deployed in a variety of health environments around the world. It offers tangible benefits to both physicians and health administrators:

  • Provides one consistent and accurate identifier, which links all disparate identifiers
  • Standardizes patient demographic data by providing one authoritative central reference point for all data
  • Provides fuzzy searching to ensure that all possible relevant patients are returned in search results
  • Ensures demographic data is always accurate and up to date
  • Cuts response times when searching for patients
  • Reduces duplicate records and shared identifiers
  • Lays the foundation for an Electronic Health Record by enabling tighter integration of departmental systems

Encourages more informed clinical decision making
Consolidation of patient demographic information enables an improved continuum of clinical care. All relevant clinical documentation can be retrieved for a physical patient because all of the relevant identifiers for the patient are known by the cEMPI. This allows physicians to make better informed decisions, which in turn allows more accurate clinical record-keeping and ultimately leads to better health outcomes for patients.

Seamless integration with existing systems
cEMPI uses open systems technology and industry standard protocols and message formats defined by HL7, allowing it to effortlessly integrate with best of breed IT systems. Data can also be imported/exported using XML or CSV files.

Where the data and message formats in existing departmental systems prevents records being directly uploaded to the cEMPI, Orion Health's Rhapsody Integration Engine can be used to map the data into a compatible format. This technique enables existing applications to be rapidly integrated with the cEMPI.
